Emerging From The Large Shadow

After losing the previous two NFC Championship Games at the hands of the Cowboys due to the defense's inability to contain the Dallas offense, the 49ers fortified their defense by acquiring several veterans spearheaded by All-Pro shutdown cornerback Deion Sanders' arrival from Atlanta.  Other players brought in to help the defense were linebackers Ken Norton, Rickey Jackson and Gary Plummer, defensive linemen Richard Dent and Charles Mann, and cornerback Toi Cook.  The 49ers reaped the benefits of a team competing for a Super Bowl when they were able to get Sanders and Jackson to take drastic pay cuts to join the team in hopes of winning their first Vince Lombardi Trophy.  Those new additions joined Dana Stubblefield, Tim McDonald, Merton Hanks, and Eric Davis to help the defense go from the 18th best defense to 8th in 1994 and the run defense went from 16th to 2nd in in the NFL.  Two rookies also made a great impact as well as first round pick Bryant Young made 42 tackles, 6 sacks, and recovered a fumble and 7th round pick Lee Woodall raised eyebrows by cracking the starting lineup following training camp.  Defensive tackle Dana Stubblefield made the Pro Bowl after leading the squad with 8.5 sacks.  Linebacker Ken Norton, Jr.  also earned a trip to Hawaii after leading the team with 77 stops and intercepting a pass.  Free safety Merton Hanks led the team with 7 interceptions and "Neon Deion" Sanders picked off 6 passes for 303 yards and 3 scores en route to winning the NFL Defensive Player of the Year award.  Both players also earned Pro Bowl invitations.

In spite of compiling better statistics than his predecessor and winning an overwhelming majority of his starts, Steve Young was criticized by the 49ers fans and the local media for "not winning the big one".  After the 49ers won their season opener on Monday Night at home against the Raiders, which saw wide receiver Jerry Rice break the NFL record for most TD receptions in a career, Steve Young had to travel to Kansas City to face his mentor for the first time.  Young could not silence his critics as his 49ers lost to Joe Montana's Chiefs, 24-17.  The 49ers bounced back with win over division rivals Los Angeles and New Orleans to up their record to 3 wins against 1 defeat.  The low point of the season came at home against Philadelphia as the Eagles embarrassed the 49ers to the tune of a 40-8 drubbing.  The Niners fell behind at Detroit the following week before coming back to defeat the Lions, 27-21.  The win sparked a winning strak that lasted for practically the rest of the regular season.  Wins against the Falcons, Bucs, and Redskins set the 49ers up for an attempt to avenge their 3-game losing strak to their hated rivals from Dallas.  The 49ers were finally succeessful in knocking off the Cowboys as they won by a 21-14 score.  The 49ers did not lose focus as they defeated their division foes Atlanta, Los Angeles, and New Orleans for the second time in consecutive weeks to set up a date with the Chargers in San Diego, which ended up being a Super Bowl preview as it turned out.  The Niners had no problems in dealing with the Chargers in the 38-15 victory.  The 42-19 victory over Denver the following week clinched home field advantage for the 49ers throughout the NFC Playoffs.  Most of the starters did not play in the team's 21-14 regular season finale defeat at the hands of Minnesota.

Steve Young earned NFL MVP honors after setting an NFL record with a 113.8 passer rating in spearheading the league's top scoring offense with 505 points.  Halfback Ricky Watters joined Young on the Pro Bowl roster after accumulating 1,596 yards from scrimmage (877 rushing) and scoring 11 touchdowns.  Fullback William "Bar None" Floyd chipped in with 305 rushing yards and 6 scores in his rookie campaign. In addition to breaking the NFL record for most TD receptions in a career, Jerry Rice caught 112 balls for 1,499 yards and 13 scores en route to another Pro Bowl appearance.  Tight end Brent Jones also made the Pro Bowl after attaining 670 yards on his 49 receptions in 1994.   Right guard Derrick Deese was a first-year starter on an otherwise veteran line led by left guard Jesse Sapolu and center Bart Oates, who both attained Pro Bowl honors in 1994.  The starting tackles were Harris Barton and Steve Wallace, who play every bit as well as Sapolu and Oates.

Dexter Carter gained over 1,000 yards returning kickoffs in 1994 - 1,105 to be exact on his 48 returns for a 23.0 yard average.  He also averaged 8.4 yards on his 38 punt returns.  Doug Brien made 60 of 62 extra points and 15 of his 20 field goal attempts, while punter Klaus Wilmsmeyer's punts traveled an average of 41.4 yards per punt.

The 49ers opened the playoffs in the second round at home against the Chicago Bears.  After allowing a field goal, the Niners would score 37 straight points in the next three quarters.  William Floyd ran for 3 scores while Steve Young passed and ran for a score.  The Bears finally broke the 37-0 run, but did not make much of a dent in the 44-15 49ers victory.  The win meant the 49ers and Cowboys would play for a trip to the Super Bowl at stake for the third straight year.

The NFC Championship game was a blowout early as Eric Davis picked off a Troy Aikman pass and returned it for a 44-yard touchdown, Steve Young and Ricky Watters hooked up for a 29-yard TD pass, and William Floyd scored on a 1-yard plunge to put the Niners up 21-0 in the first quarter.  Troy Aikman and Michael Irvin hooked up for a 44-yard TD pass and catch with 2:14 left in the opening stanza to put the Cowboys within 14.  The Cowboys were able to outscore the 49ers 21-17 the rest of the way, but it was not enough to prevent Steve Young from leading the 49ers to the Super Bowl for the first time as a starting quarterback.

Joe Robbie Stadium in Miami was the site of the 49ers' attempt to be the first organization in NFL history to win 5 Super Bowl Championships.  The 49ers faced the AFC Champion Chargers and would burn the Charger defense to the tune of two TD passes to Ricky Watters, one to Jerry Rice, and one to William Floyd.  Only one Charger score was sandwiched in there and that was a Natrone Means 1-yard TD plunge.  The score was 28-10 at the half and this proved to be a bigger hole than the Chargers could climb out of.  The 49ers started off the second half with a 9 yard Ricky Watters 9 yard TD run - his third score of the game and a 15 yard hookup from Steve Young to Jerry Rice and the rout was on.  The Chargers did counter with a 98 yard kickoff return for a touchdown by Andre Coleman, the longest return in Super Bowl history and Stan Humphries and Tony Martin hooked up for a 30 yard TD pass to close the scoring, but it was the 49ers day to shine as the 49ers won 49-26 and Steve Young proved he could not only beat Dallas, but also win a Super Bowl.  He had finally won over the 49ers' fans.

Quarterback Steve Young had finally escaped from Joe Montana's everpresent shadow as he led the 49ers to their first Super Bowl title since Montana's departure.

Wide Receiver Jerry Rice continued his reign as hardest working and best receiver in Pro Football in 1994 with 113 receptions and 13 of those receptions resulting in touchdowns.
